Instrument Construction - the neck

The making of a violoncello, based on the Stradivari pattern "Forma B Piccola".

Having closed the body of the 'cello, I now carve and fit the neck.

Squaring up the neck block, ensuring that the grain is orientated to give maximum strength.

The outline of the neck and scroll are cut out.

I draw the shape of scroll that I want and work to the line as I go round the curves.

Carving the scroll.

The finished 'cello scroll.

The neck root is prepared for fitting to the body.

The instruments are hung in sunlight to tan them because this enhances the look of the wood under the varnish and also effects the tonality.

Here the cello is ready for the application of the traditional mineral ground and then varnishing.

The varnished and complete instrument can be seen here.
